Events: Safer streets in Prince George’s County

People walking to schools, transit, stores, and elsewhere are put at risk as they traverse wide, high-speed roads. With Prince George’s County leading the region in traffic and pedestrian deaths, the Coalition for Smarter Growth is asking how we can make roads safer. Join them to hear from Kandese Holford, Maryland Department of Transportation, who will share more about the state’s efforts to make state roads safer through an updated Complete Streets Policy and implementation of the Maryland Pedestrian Safety Action Plan. You’ll also hear from school and community activists along with public officials. Learn how updated policies translate into safer walking and biking, better transit service, business opportunities, and community health.

Wednesday, July 24:

DC YIMBYs July happy hour: Elections are coming up, and housing is on the ballot! Come join the DC YIMBYs for their next happy hour, and find out what they’re doing in the upcoming Advisory Neighborhood Commission elections to make sure housing is a TOP priority in Washington, DC. Frustrated by the high cost of housing? Passionate about walkable neighborhoods with multimodal transportation? Well let’s grab a drink, roll up our sleeves, and take action!

DIY/Open Shop Night @ VéloCity Bicycle Cooperative: Help VéloCity Bicycle Cooperative’s Open Night patrons fix their bikes! Get an instant feeling of satisfaction watching someone leave with a bike you helped them fix. They’ll have a staff member onsite as well to help. This is also a good opportunity to learn how a bike shop operates during normal business hours.

Stream Team Leader Training: Join Rock Creek Conservancy for a virtual training for their Stream Team Leader program! Stream Team Leaders are dedicated volunteers that work with the Conservancy to host their own trash cleanups and stormwater engagement events, increasing stewardship actions within their communities and throughout Washington, DC, and Montgomery County, Md. The training will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent to all registered participants on the day of the training.

Thursday, July 25:

Volunteer Night @ The Warehouse: Come volunteer with VéloCity Bicycle Cooperative helping refurbish donated bicycles so that they can be used again by the community! This event is open to anyone (i.e. new volunteers, existing volunteers) who is interested, no mechanical experience necessary. The warehouse is closed to customers so that you can get hands-on experience with learning bicycle mechanics. This is a volunteer-run space so sometimes you will spend time organizing, sorting donations, and stripping parts of bicycles.
