Gawk at DC’s beautiful new design for the South Capitol Street bridge

DDOT is planning to replace the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, where South Capitol Street crosses the Anacostia River. Their newest designs are a marvel of modern aesthetics, and a striking departure from Washington's 20th Century bridges.

Unlike earlier more mundane design concepts, this one soars. Look at those curves. No boring right angles here.

The new bridge will cross the river close to the same spot as the old bridge, just south of the Nationals ballpark. GGWash has criticized the “racetrack-like” traffic ovals at each foot, and they do still appear to be a problem.

Walking across the street into the ovals could be rough. It looks worth it though, especially on the ballpark side with its plaza and fountain.

The bridge will have a great pedestrian and bike crossing.

And it will offer an improved Anacostia trail.

And it will undoubtedly be nice to look at.

DDOT says construction will begin in winter 2017, and be complete by fall 2021.
