Let’s keep it simple: If you can avoid going anywhere near downtown until after Inauguration Day on January 20, you should. It’s going to be a mess.
But if you have to get downtown, it helps to know where you’ll run into road closures, barricades, and all the other security measures that are proliferating ahead of the inauguration after a violent mob breached the Capitol last week.
Security measures are normal for inaugurations, but this year the dual threats of right-wing violence and the coronavirus have sparked extraordinary measures.
Officials are asking people not to attend the inauguration, and about 20,000 National Guard troops are expected to be deployed in the District on Inauguration Day. On Thursday, the Post reported that the entire National Mall, where spectators typically come to watch inauguration ceremonies, will be closed to the public on Inauguration Day.
Transit won’t get you around the closures: Beginning this weekend, Metro is closing 13 stations and detouring Metrobus routes around the closures. Trains will pass through the closed stations without stopping.
With multiple federal and local sources reporting closures, we compiled what’s been reported so far into a map. Note, however, that the situation is fluid, and officials have warned to look out for changes.
