GGWash is looking to hire two new team members to support our elections and community development work.

If you are passionate about local politics, have a demonstrated interest in sustainable and equitable transportation and housing in Greater Washington, and want to learn more about non-profit administration and our regional political structures, we hope you’ll consider applying.

Position 1: Elections Assistant

Are you passionate about local politics? Are you super-organized? Greater Greater Washington is seeking an Elections Assistant from September through November of 2020 to manage the process of making endorsements for almost 300 local Advisory Neighborhood Commission races in the District of Columbia.

The Elections Assistant will work with our volunteer elections committee to cover candidates, publish questionnaires, and ultimately make endorsement decisions for Advisory Neighborhood Commission candidates in the November 3, 2020 elections.

This is a remote, part-time paid position suitable for a college or graduate student, or someone looking for intermittent part-time work through the end of 2020. We hope that, in addition to paying you for your labor, you’ll learn a bit about how our endorsement process works, how local elections work, and how nonprofits like GGWash work.

Who we’re looking for

This is an administrative role: It requires staying on top of your email, meeting deadlines, and communicating clearly, professionally, and respectfully with candidates. Lots of job postings ask for detail-oriented candidates; this is an especially detail-oriented role, since you’ll need to track who’s responded to what, and when, and accurately compile that correspondence for publication—and following up is essential.

No knowledge of local politics or political history is required, though if you’ve got it, it will certainly benefit you. Likewise, an interest in land use, transportation, and housing, GGWash’s issue areas, is an asset. For those considering this as an internship, it’s most relevant to political science, public policy, public administration, and similar areas, though a particular field of study is not a requirement for this role.

As with all of our staffing efforts, we welcome applicants from groups that are generally underrepresented in our field. We encourage and support individuals who can bring a racially, economically, or geographically diverse perspective to our organization and our work.

Responsibilities

Assist with managing elections committee volunteers:

  • Schedule meetings as needed (right now, this is every few weeks, in the evenings)
  • Take notes at meetings
  • Undertake any necessary followups on calendaring, candidate correspondence, etc., as related to convening the elections committee or carrying out the tasks described below.

Generally, lead correspondence with candidates necessary to make endorsement decisions in DC, Maryland, and Virginia races:

  • Track outcomes and logistics for contested races across the DC region
  • Alongside the elections committee, write questionnaires
  • Send questionnaires to candidates, follow up with candidates, and collect their questionnaire responses

Specifically, ensure timely endorsements in Advisory Neighborhood Commission races in DC by the Nov. 3, 2020 general election:

  • Track outcomes and logistics for the 200+ ANC seats, which will include uncontested races, contested races, and write-in candidates
  • Alongside the elections committee, write questionnaires that reflect specific issues that ANCs will have to deal with in the wards and single-member districts in which they work and which they represent
  • Send questionnaires to candidates, follow up with candidates, and collect their questionnaire responses

Position 2: Community Development Intern

Do you want to learn what it takes to run a non-profit? Are you hoping to build a career in nonprofit management and/or around sustainable and equitable transportation and housing in the Washington DC area?

Greater Greater Washington is seeking a Community Development Intern to help strengthen and systematize our interactions with our community of readers, members and volunteers through events, advocacy, and other engagement opportunities. This position is predominantly administrative, though the right applicant would have the opportunity to engage further in fundraising or advocacy efforts if they would like.

This is a remote, part-time paid position suitable for a college or graduate student, or someone looking for intermittent part-time work through the end of 2020. As with all of our staffing efforts, we welcome applicants from groups that are generally underrepresented in our field. We encourage and support individuals who can bring a racially, economically, or geographically diverse perspective to our organization and our work.

Responsibilities

Membership Management and Events (40% of time)

  • Assist GGWash staff and volunteers with (virtual) event planning, and logistics.
  • Help generate conversation in the GGWash Neighborhood, our membership program
  • Assist the development staff with organizing Neighborhood perks
  • Monitor external communications channels to help streamline supporter engagement

Data entry and analysis (40% of time)

  • Help with day to day management of CRM (deduplicating supporters, marking bad addresses)
  • Learn to use our CRM to track engagement history and run reports on donor activity
  • Work with development staff to analyze effectiveness of current fundraising strategies

Media and Advocacy (20% of time)

  • Learn how to use our CRM to carry out digital advocacy to mobilize readers to take action in support of our housing and transportation policies
  • Improve your writing skills by drafting and editing calls to action to accompany educational blog posts
  • Author at least one article for the GGWash publication (one about GGWash operations, one of personal interest highly encouraged)

Please see the individual job descriptions for specific details on how to apply, applications for both positions are due on Friday, September 4. Please share this post with anyone you know that may be interested.
