Greater Greater Washington has become what it is thanks to a large community of readers, commenters, contributors, volunteers, and donors. Thank you!

We periodically recruit volunteers for various roles, like writing articles or serving on our Editorial Board (which sets the content direction), Advocacy Committee (which determines advocacy efforts), and Elections Committee (which determines our political endorsements).

Now, we’re interested in finding folks with relevant experience and ability to support Greater Greater Washington to serve on our Board of Directors, particularly from Northern Virginia and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland.

About the Board

The Board of Directors sets high-level organizational goals for the organization, reviews and approves the budget, ensures legal compliance, manages and reviews the Executive Director and Managing Director, and assists in raising funds and developing revenue streams. Greater Greater Washington is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization.

Board members serve one-year terms with the opportunity to extend for future years and an expectation of serving at least two one-year terms. Board members are added on a rolling basis at one of the quarterly board meetings (March, June, September, and December).

Board members should have some or all of these qualifications:

  • Strong passion for urbanism and the issues Greater Greater Washington covers
  • Experience working with a nonprofit or nonprofit board
  • Experience with digital media business growth, event planning leadership, local or national foundations, individual or corporate fundraising, law, banking, or community development
  • Experience with financial analysis or oversight of nonprofit programs
  • Connections to leaders in the Washington region

Board members should be able to:

  • Make GGWash’s success a priority
  • Contribute about 3-6 hours per month to board-related service
  • Participate in quarterly in-person meetings (usually 4-6 pm)
  • Participate in one board committee (fundraising, governance, or finance) involving monthly conference calls and some follow-up tasks between calls
  • Contribute or raise at least $2,500 annually (give/get)

We aim for a board which reflects the geographic and demographic diversity of the Washington region. Currently, we are particularly interested in adding candidates who live in Northern Virginia or Montgomery or Prince George’s counties in Maryland.

You can apply for the GGWash Board of Directors here.

While interest in Greater Greater Washington’s issues and commitment to GGWash’s success are very important, the board does not make decisions around web content, advocacy activities, or elections. Those are guided by our volunteer program committees and are separate from the Board of Directors. Board discussions primarily focus on the organization’s operations, finances, and sustainability.

If you are interested in assisting with political endorsements, we are also looking for DC residents to assist with endorsements for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in the 2018 general election and Northern Virginia residents to assist with endorsements for the 2019 primary. You can express interest in either of these here.
