To make a positive impact in the community, it’s important to do more than just read about and discuss issues online. We publish our weekly events post to tell you about opportunities to get out and act!

The Montgomery County Planning Department is working on a new Bicycle Master Plan that will decide where new bike lanes go in the county. This is the first time since 1978 that all the recommendations that Montgomery County planners make about bicycles will be in a single plan!

Attend one of five meetings throughout the county over the next two weeks to weigh in on the plan and make sure it supports the low-stress, high-quality bike facilities that make biking easier and safer. The meetings are on Tuesday, June 6, Thursday, June 8, Monday, June 12, Wednesday, June 14, and Thursday, June 22. All meetings are from 4 to 9 pm.

Also, check out these other great events:

Wednesday, June 7: Walking around the White Flint Metro can be dangerous, but you can help make it safer. Join the Coalition for Smarter Growth and Friends of White Flint at 7:30 pm at the White Flint Metro station for their first “Walkable Wednesday.” You'll take a walking tour of White Flint, learning about pedestrian issues and what you can do right now to make walking easier and safer there and in other communities across Montgomery County.

Wednesday, June 7: Love Jane Jacobs' The Death and Life of Great American Cities? Hate it? Share your opinions on the book at a discussion on Wednesday at 914 3rd Street NE at 7 pm.

Thursday, June 8: As part of a summer road repaving program in Fairfax, Rose Hill Drive will get narrower travel lanes and newly striped bike lanes from Franconia Road to Telegraph Road. Weigh in on the project at a community meeting on Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm in the cafeteria of Mark Twain Middle School (4700 Franconia Road).

Sunday, June 11: This year marks the 200th birthday of the bicycle. Come celebrate with a unique all-ages bicycle race that will not allow any pedaling at all! Kids should bring their scooters and older cyclists should be prepared to remove their pedals. Everyone will get prizes, and some will walk away with the coveted Baron Karl Von Drais Bikecentennial Velocipede Cup. Races start at 3 pm at the RFK parking lot, below the East Capitol Street Bridge. Registration is free.

Next Thursday, June 15: The District Department of Transportation is still working on making dedicated bus lanes on 16th Street, between Arkansas Avenue and H Street, a reality. Come get the latest update on the project next Thursday, June 15 at 6:30 pm at the Mt Pleasant Library (3160 16th Street NW).
