To make our region greater, we need to get involved both online and in person. Check our our list of ways to get involved!

The United States has a long-running love affair with cars, and here in the DC region we’re still struggling to focus on moving people rather than moving cars. Peter Newman, the author of

The End of Automobile Dependence: How Cities are Moving Beyond Car-Based Planning, has examined car-dependence in 44 global cities.

Hear what Newman has learned and how it relates to where we live at a book talk this Thursday, August 11, at ZGF Architects (1800 K Street NW #200). Doors open at 5:30 pm and the event begins at 6 pm.

Other upcoming events:

Tuesday, August 9: As residents flock to urbanizing areas, there’s often both a need for new schools and limited land to build on. Hear from Pranjali Rai and Ralph Bennett from the University of Maryland at this month’s Action Committee for Transit meeting as they address building schools in high-density areas. The meeting is on Tuesday, August 9 at 7:30 pm at the Silver Spring Civic Building (1 Veterans Place).

Saturday, August 13: What could make Ward 4 an even better place to live? The District’s Department of Transportation wants to know and is holding two simultaneous outreach events on Saturday, August 13, both from 9 am to 1 pm. One is at the 14th & Kennedy Farmers’ Market (14th and Kennedy Streets NW) and the other is at the Petworth Community Market (9th and Upshur Streets NW).

Next Thursday, August 18: Learn about the latest tech that’s helping people share the road at Playing with Traffic, an event at 6pm at the WeWork in Crystal City (2221 South Clark Street).

Calendar: Beyond what we’ve highlighted here, there are many other worthwhile events across the region. Check out more great events in our events calendar:
