On Tuesday, we posted our fifty-fifth photo challenge to see how well you know Metro. I took five photos in the Metro system. Here are the answers. How well did you do?

This week, we got 16 guesses. Five of you got all five right. Great work, Peter K, Robb, JamesDCane, MZEBE, and Mr Johnson!

Image 1: Landover

The first image shows a northbound Amtrak train passing Landover station. This one should have been fairly easy to figure out given the clues. Note the wires and the electric Amtrak locomotive. The only part of the Amtrak system around here that is electrified is the Northeast Corridor.

Only four Metro stations sit adjacent to the Northeast Corridor. You can eliminate Cheverly because that station has side platforms and high walls. It can’t be NoMa because of how many tracks there are and because there are no buildings visible. And if this were New Carrollton, you’d still be able to see the Amtrak station. That leaves Landover.

Twelve of you figured this one out.

Image 2: Addison Road

The next image shows the clocktower and parking structure at Addison Road. The steps in the foreground lead from the station entrance to a bridge that connects to the garage. The design of the tower and garage are distinctive, so identifying them was the key to solving this one.

Seven people managed to get this one right.

Image 3: Vienna

The third image shows the platform at Vienna. The main clue here is the diagonal glass wall to the right of the track. Only two stations have this feature: Vienna and West Falls Church.

You can identify this as Vienna because at that station the “wall” beyond the diagonal glass area is just a chain link fence. At West Falls Church, the wall is concrete. Also at West Falls Church, instead of a vegetated berm, you’d be able to see parts of the northern bus loop.

So, based on those clues, this must be Vienna. Seven of you figured that out.

Image 4: Woodley Park

This image shows the elevator at Woodley Park. Because of the depth of the station, the elevator emerges a block north of the escalators, and since it’s a block closer to the zoo, is very popular with the tourists who don’t want to walk another block to the escalators on their way back.

The Connecticut Avenue corridor in this area is lined with apartment buildings like the one in the background. Guessing one of the stations along Connecticut would have been a great strategy.

You could narrow this down by recognizing that the street elevators at Cleveland Park and Van Ness aren’t near apartments like these. That left Woodley Park as the best guess. And Google’s street view could have confirmed the selection.

Eight correctly guessed Woodley Park.

Image 5: Shady Grove

The final image shows the stair/escalator to the platform at Shady Grove. It’s a very similar perspective to one of the pictures included in week 47.

But if you didn’t remember that set, there were three clues to help you figure it out. From the image, you can tell that this is a Gull I station. The “next train” track indicator shows that this is an end-of-line station. Those two clues narrow this down to Shady Grove and New Carrollton.

But New Carrollton doesn’t have a staircase between the escalators, so this has to be Shady Grove. Eleven of you knew that.

Thanks to everyone for playing! Great work. Stay tuned. We’ll have five more images for you next week.
