Breakfast links: Growing
Walkability is for young adults
DC and Arlington are attracting large numbers of “echo boomers” (aka Millenials). Arlington particularly appeals to people who want a somewhat suburban feel but also the walkability of the city. (Post)
Stop planting flowers at the Metro!
A man planted flowers in the steep cobblestoned area around the Dupont Circle Metro north escalators. But Metro threatened him with “arrest, fines, and imprisonment” if he continues. (Post, Thad) (Tip: Thad)
Why run more 8-car trains
Metro ridership has grown from 500,000 people a day in the 1990s to 750,000 today. It can run 100% 8-car trains by 2021, fit 35,000 more people per hour and make trains less crowded, if WMATA can get $2 billion. (PlanItMetro)
The Silver Line and North Korea
Innovation Center will be a stop on the Silver Line in Fairfax, but is also a stop on Pyongyang’s Metro. Loudoun is not, however, adding a “Complete Victory in Battle” station. (BeyondDC)
Very large, somewhat-urban Wegmans?
Wegmans is interested in opening a store at Walter Reed. Their typical stores are 18 sprawling acres, but they are experimenting with more compact stores for urban locations, though it would still be a big store. (WBJ)
Capital Crescent gets a gate
The National Park Service installed a gate at the Georgetown end of the Capital Crescent Trail, to keep people from driving onto the trail by mistake. That will also stop people parking in a nearby muddy area. (WTOP)
Reticence on Reston redevelopment
Fairfax County is looking to redevelop an affordable housing complex in Reston. They’ll require the replacement to house existing residents and add more workforce housing, but residents are nervous. (Post)
Dangerous part of the region
A bicyclist minding his own business was hit by a stray bullet. East of the river in DC, you might think? No, Herndon, Virginia. (Post)
Require complete streets
A bipartisan pair in Congress want to require complete streets standards in federally funded streets. Maybe that will stop departments like St. Louis County’s which completely refuse to consider bike infrastructure. (Streetsblog)
And…
Someone wants to make a DC version of Risk. What would DC versions of other games, like Settlers of Catan, look like? (PoPville, City Paper) … 2 of the pedestrians hit last week were tourists from Bogotá, about to board a train to see a Broadway play. (Post) … Hotels depend on school trips to fill sequestration budget holes. (Post)
