On the calendar: Meet Virginia
Walk Arlington
This weekend is chock full of opportunities to see walkable and bikeable areas in the Old Dominion. On Friday, Arlington County Chair Barbara Favola will lead a WALKArlington walkabout of Rosslyn at 6 pm (arrive at 5:45). And the next morning, her colleague Chris Zimmerman will lead a tour of Shirlington, where Arlington is bringing Smart Growth to an area without Metro (RSVP required by 4 pm Friday).
Bike the bridge
After seeing Shirlington, head over to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, whose trail will open at 1 pm. WABA is organizing community bike convoys to reach the trail from Alexandria, Fairfax, and Oxon Hill.
Plan VRE
The IEEE’s monthly Land Transportation Committee lunch will discuss VRE’s growth plans on Tuesday. It’s $20 for lunch, 11:30 am at APTA, 1666 K Street NW, 11th floor. RSVP by 4 pm Friday.
Compare school redevelopment plans
Several bidders are vying for the right to develop each of DC’s two most attractive closed school buildings: Stevens Elementary between Dupont and Foggy Bottom, and Hine Junior High on Capitol Hill. On Wednesday, June 10th, the six finalists for Hine will show their plans and get community input at Tyler Elementary, 1001 G Street SE at 6 pm. Thursday, the three Stevens finalists will do the same at Francis-Stevens Education Campus, 2425 N Street NW at 6:30.
