Breakfast links: Not an accident
Police won’t charge Swanson’s killer
The police have issued their final report on Alice Swanson’s death, and have decided not to charge the driver. Bicycle advocates are keeping the report’s details quiet out of respect for the family, but are extremely disappointed after reading the report. (WashCycle)
Really not an accident
An alleged drunk driver struck and killed Maryland native and Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others in Fullerton, California yesterday. Police filed “felony hit and run” charges against the driver. Nevertheless, the headline and text of most articles still called it an “accident”, as in, “Angels rookie pitcher loses life in accident.” Harping on this may be making a difference here, at least: several of you immediately noticed and sent it in, and DCist’s article properly calls it a “crash.” (Sam, Greg) Chris suggests we also reexamine the intersection where Adenhart died, an area designed for speed.
They need Leon
Prince George’s residents find many taxis illegally refuse to transport them short distances, preferring to hold out for a bigger fare. Many of the cabs also don’t properly display their ID numbers. Kauai residents repair road themselves
An access road to a state park had washed out. The state estimated it would cost $4 million and possibly two years to fix, threatening local businesses. Instead, residents volunteered, did the work for free, and completed in in 8 days. (CNN, Jaime) (Tip: Jaime)
Vacant schools draw bids
Developers submitted bids to redevelop 11 vacant schools, with most of the bids focusing on Hine Jr. High in Capitol Hill and Stevens Elementary in Foggy Bottom. (Jaime) Richard Layman feels this ought to be part of our broader planning process instead of sequestered by ODMPED. (Tip: Jaime)
Splitting comments should be fixed
Several of you said you don’t like the way that the email notifying you about comments on a links post sends you to a page showing just the comments on that particular link, instead of the main post. I’ve fixed that. If you see any other places where this is happening, post a comment and I’ll fix it as well.
