Southwest might not have as big an impact as you hope
On Monday morning Southwest Airlines announced its intent to acquire AirTran Airways. The deal won’t be approved for some time, but when it is, the new combined company will likely impact air travel in Greater Washington. The big question is when Washingtonians will finally be able to catch a Southwest flight out of National Airport, and whether a Southwest presence will… Keep reading…

Rail to Dulles, Loudoun has a silver lining
The highly controversial and much anticipated Silver Line has its faults. But it has the potential to profoundly impact Washington area transportation well into the future. Undoubtedly this new transit connection has some shortcomings. The elevated design through Tysons Corner will likely have a negative impact on walkability in that area. WTOP reports that Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)… Keep reading…

Less discussed is the carbon impact merely of getting to the airport — the “toeprint” of the flight. The more single-vehicle trips, the bigger the impact. Of many culprit airports across the country, one of the worst is Dulles. Technically,… Keep reading…

A split-level Dulles Metro stop would be best
A few days ago, it was reported that the MWAA was considering moving the proposed Metro station at Dulles Airport. The relocated station would be elevated and 600 feet further from the terminal. It is important that the station be located close to the terminal. But I would like to propose an improvement above the underground station originally proposed in the Final Environmental… Keep reading…

MWAA considers moving Dulles Airport Metro stop
The Washington Post reported today that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is building the Silver Line, is considering moving the proposed Metro station at Dulles Airport away from the terminal. While there are not yet any detailed plans, the move would allow the station to be built above-ground. This could shave quite a bit off the project’s cost. Keep reading…
