After the Planning Board rejected the proposal, Mehring resubmitted a proposal for 24 townhouses… Keep reading…

Afternoon links: Don’t fall into the tunnel
Doors opening: Some Metro rail drivers are still opening the doors of 8-car trains too soon, leaving passengers in the last two cars facing a tunnel wall. “Virtually all improper door incidents occur because operators forget they are in an eight-car train, officials said, and don’t pull the trains all the way to the front of the platform. Instead, they are berthing… Keep reading…

The Wheaton library should be in downtown Wheaton
The draft for the new Wheaton Sector Plan currently includes provisions to build a new library in downtown Wheaton. The new library would replace the current Wheaton library which, oddly, is not in downtown Wheaton. Rather, it is north of downtown Wheaton, on the corner of Arcola Avenue and Georgia Avenue. The city will move forward with the land transfer and EIS for now, prepare the land itself, and then re-bid the development. DC United and the District have stopped… Keep reading…

Boxing Day links: bikes, buses and blogs
Ticket dismissed: One of the bicyclists ticketed for riding the wrong way on New Hampshire Avenue by U Street, Sam DuPont, successfully appealed his citation. DuPont argued that “going the wrong way on NH was the only safe way to navigate that part of the city, and that DDOT has recognized this fact in their plans to install contraflow bike lanes on that very block.”… Keep reading…

Montgomery County: America in microcosm
Montgomery County, and most of the Washington region, is far from typical of the United States in many ways. Both Montgomery County and the region as a whole have higher education and income levels than the nation on average, and even the less affluent parts of the county have a median income that is well above the national median income. However, on land use, the county is grappling with… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Things that stink
The “smelly fish under the table”: Purple Line supporters argue in the Post that the Purple Line will bring job access and development opportunity to poorer eastern Montgomery and Prince George’s, and that opposition stems at least in part from “elitism” and a desire to keep those brown people out of their areas.
