Station name debate focuses too little on helping riders
If you listened to the WMATA Board discuss station names this morning, you could be forgiven if you concluded the board is made up of representatives from local universities, hospitals, and sports teams, and that those institutions, rather than riders and residents, pay for Metro. That’s because where institutions want to be on Metro station names, most members from… Keep reading…

What you said about station names
749 people voted in our poll on station names. What did you conclude? In short: Metro should use subtitles for long station names, including Grosvenor, and also short station names with universities in the name. Forest Glen and Waterfront shouldn’t gain anything else, while Navy Yard should add Ballpark as a subtitle and King Street add Old Town. New York Avenue versus… Keep reading…

Gallaudet University students are mobilizing to oppose the idea of moving their university’s name into a subtitle on the nearby Metro station. Adding places to station names creates unnecessary transfers
Several neighborhoods and organizations have proposed renaming Metro stations to make a single destination easy to find. But each of these can bring the unintended consequence of making the whole system more confusing to navigate. At first glance, renaming “Navy Yard” to “Navy Yard-Ballpark” seems like a fine idea, since it is the station that most… Keep reading…

“Navy Yard-W” is worst of new station name proposals
Southwest and Near Southeast’s ANC 6D voted Monday night to support changing the Navy Yard Metro station to “Navy Yard-.” Yes, with a logo in the name. This is just one of the craziest of the many proposals to add nearby attractions to Metro station names. The ANC’s action actually just amends their previous resolution, which supported the too-long… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Easy fix might not be easy
It’s hard to relieve traffic (without pricing); Just try following speed limits; Will HUD stop undermining mixed-use?; Red light runner hits Tregoning; “Virtual tunnel”? Got a better name?; Capitol Riverfront/Curly W station?; MetroAccess not growing, more confusing; And…. Keep reading…

Station subtitles shouldn’t be excuse for longer names
Metro will use subtitles for long station names on the Metro map. This move bodes well for the clarity of the map, but the WMATA Board must be careful not to use it as an excuse to even further worsen name sprawl by making longer subtitles. Metro’s map is being redesigned because of major changes to service patterns next year and the construction of the Silver Line. In March,… Keep reading…

Metro will shorten station names using subtitles
It will still take some time to fix the escalators, but Metro has found a solution to another smaller perennial annoyance for riders: unwieldy station names. They are adopting a suggestion that came out of our map contest, to break up long names into primary titles and subtitles. Keep reading…
