What does WMATA’s non-dire 2022 budget mean for an equitable recovery in DC?
We were worried for a minute there. WMATA’s FY2022 budget, which runs from June 2021 to June 2022, could have been bad. But the $2.07 operating billion budget passed at the WMATA Board’s meeting in April means that, while not the full restoration to pre-pandemic levels that advocates hoped for, services will look fairly similar to what they used to. More cracks were found at Silver Line stations. Here’s what needs to happen before Metro opens Phase 2.
Over 11% of the concrete panels installed at five of the six new stations on the Silver Line extension to Dulles have cracks in them, according to a new report published by the Metro Office of Inspector General. Tysons wants to transform into a bona-fide city. It won’t be easy.
What would you do if you were tasked with doubling the number of jobs and raising the number of residents from about 14,000 people to 100,000 in a city? The last new Metro station in Fairfax County before Dulles Airport will be Innovation Center, a somewhat bland name which Metro briefly tried to sell to an unnamed “Fortune 500 Company.” It had to pull back in the face of opposition from Fairfax County officials, but in the meantime, the area is bustling with change. I took a look around. Keep reading…

How big and how fast should Reston grow? Leaders will soon debate this question.
Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn recently called for an amendment of the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan for Reston. The Comp Plan is a sort of master document for the planning, development, and priorities for the census-designated area. The plan hasn’t been amended in five years. So what do these changes mean for the development of Reston? Keep reading…

Metro shows six “fantasy maps” for the Blue and Silver lines
When Greater Greater Washington was getting started almost 12 years ago, we had a lot of fun making up maps of what the Metrorail network might look like if we just added a few lines, or a lot. We stopped doing this, because while it’s fun, new Metrorail lines are expensive and just drawing lines on a map doesn’t factor in what professional planners need to think about. Keep reading…
