DC USA: SmartBike yes (eventually), racks in garage no
New Columbia Heights talked to DDOT’s bicycle program manager, Jim Sebastian, who confirmed that there will be a SmartBike station in Columbia Heights once SmartBike’s next round of expansion gets going (time indeterminate). Keep reading…

Connecting communities (or not)
It was Councilmember Marion Barry (ward 8) who had the day’s most relevant quote. “Streetcars are about connecting communities,” he said, as he urged his colleagues to support the proposed 1.3-mile, $43-million Anacostia demonstration streetcar in his ward. There’s only one problem: the proposed line doesn’t connect communities at all. There’s no community on South Capitol… Keep reading…

DDOT calls a time out
We did it! After a flood of public comments to DDOT and the DC Council, DDOT decided to suspend the proposed rules forcing buses to load at L’Enfant Plaza. Emails from busruletimeout.com and customers of DC2NY to DDOT and Councilmember Jim Graham tipped the balance. Great work! Keep reading…

“Hanging on to the last vestiges of a car-based economy”
DC Councilmembers Jim Graham, Tommy Wells, and Phil Mendelson had sharp questions for representatives of numerous industry groups at yesterday’s hearing on the parking tax loophole. Clearly coordinated in advance, industry reps from the hotels, universities, hospitals, building owners, Pepco, and even nursing homes and Covenant House (always good to pull the heartstrings… Keep reading…

Are Maryland drivers the “devil incarnate”?
Jim Graham says so. Whether excessive hyperbole or not, his comment led to an ABC News story about speeding commuters, especially on 15th Street, and even a mention of the proposal to make it two-way. Via DCist (who thinks Graham was spot on). Keep reading…

Park(ing) at Sherman and Park
New Columbia Heights reports on the recent community meeting about parks in the neighborhood. In the center of the block from Lamont to Park and Sherman to 11th is a large open area, currently “used as an illegal dumping and parking area.” Councilmember Graham is working on getting the city to buy the property and forgive back taxes to transfer it to Washington Parks &… Keep reading…

Klingle Road dead, dead, dead; bike trail alive
Liveblogging the Council hearing… OK, Finally the Council has gotten to Klingle again. This is the second reading and the final opportunity. Graham is saying that since it’s so late, he’s not going to reopen the entire discussion. Whoops, but now he’s talking about it anyway. The question of whether it’s a road, he says, is different from… Keep reading…

Where do DC’s at-large Councilmembers live?
I’m listening to the entertaining debate in the DC Council on the noise bill, broadcast on the local cable Channel 13. Harry Thomas (ward 5) introduced an amendment to restrict the proposed legislation to only residentially zoned districts, as opposed to mixed-use districts. Muriel Bowser (ward 4), Jim Graham (1) and Yvette Alexander (7) so far have spoken in favor of this… Keep reading…

Entire level of DC USA garage has never been used
Councilmember Jim Graham is rightly very proud of bringing Target and other stores to Columbia Heights, giving residents places to shop and jobs. And many of them are taking Metro. Graham emailed community lists to report that Metro ridership at the Columbia Heights station is up 24% on weekdays and 39% on weekends since the stores opened. Keep reading…

Graham not giving up on Klingle
Jim Graham must feel pretty strongly about saving five minutes: he lost crushingly in the Council vote, but is still posting on neighborhood lists encouraging people to sign a pro-road Klingle petition. According to Graham, the final final vote is Tuesday, June 3. Keep reading…
