Alexandria’s King Street will get bike lanes after all
Alexandria’s transportation director gave the order Friday to build bike lanes on King Street west of Old Town. The decision ends a long and contentious debate over whether to remove parking spaces. A 4th option for M Street SE/SW
M Street SE/SW is not a very good street. It’s has more car lanes than it needs, and it isn’t hospitable to bikes and pedestrians. Unfortunately, the options in a study by DDOT and CH2M Hill unnecessarily force a choice between bikes and transit. Cyclists need a decent crosstown route, or maybe two. Transit vehicles should stay on M Street, to serve the densest part… Keep reading…

Metro riders now have the option to use secure bike parking at the College Park station. At a grand opening today, WMATA officials welcomed riders to the new indoor storage facility. The new “bike and ride” facility is located in the bottom level of the parking garage at the College Park station. Small changes could make crossing Sousa Bridge safer
Anyone who has walked or biked across the Sousa Bridge, which carries Pennsylvania Avenue over the Anacostia River, knows that it is one of the most dangerous bridge crossings in DC. DDOT needs to make this route safer, but in the meantime, it and NPS can make an alternate route through Anacostia Park more efficient and desirable. When you bike or walk across the Sousa bridge, you… Keep reading…

Reducing school traffic would help rush hour congestion
Here’s a simple suggestion to improve the morning rush hour: Get more kids to walk, bike, and bus to school. It is estimated that 20% of morning traffic congestion in Fairfax County is related to parents driving kids to school, and despite the availability of alternates, drop-off lines are only getting longer. No one wins under the current system. Taxpayers pay too… Keep reading…

At a confirmation hearing for DDOT Director nominee Terry Bellamy on Friday, Council committee chair Tommy Wells asked about the status of the L and M Street cycle tracks, which would run between Pennsylvania… Keep reading…

Replacing street parking with bike sharing is good policy
The Arlington County Republican Party recently chose to make a stink over the fact that as many as eight metered parking spaces have been replaced with Capital Bikeshare stations. However, this is really a non-issue. Prior to this, 100% of street parking in Arlington was for cars; now it’s maybe 98-99%. That is still remarkably unbalanced. TBD interviewed me for a… Keep reading…

Upper NW study suggests traffic calming, bike boulevards
DDOT has completed its “livability” study for upper Northwest neighborhoods, which recommends a number of changes to calm speeding traffic and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The study focused on Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase DC, Forest Hills, AU Park, and Tenleytown. DDOT tabulated motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes; surveyed residents… Keep reading…
