2010 wish list for transit
Since many transit projects have either broken ground or are in the engineering phase in the region, it is important to create long-term visions that will continue to make Greater Washington Greater. Some projects are new, while others repeat from last year’s list because they were good ideas then and are good ideas now. Build a southern entrance to Columbia… Keep reading…

A new late-night map to soften the blow of Metrorail cuts
The proposed cuts to Metrobus and Metrorail for the current fiscal year, which could go into effect as soon as January, include a plan to reduce rail headways to 30 minutes at night. Currently, trains come about every 20 minutes on each line. Where two lines run together, headways are about 10 minutes. The Red Line has scheduled headways of 15 minutes, but with trackwork every evening… Keep reading…

Where the Metro riders are, and aren’t
How full are Metro’s trains at any point in the system? What routes do riders take when confronted with a choice between two transfers, or between a longer one-seat ride and a transfer? Last year, in discussing maps I created about the proposed Blue Line reroute, a reader asked about this, but Metro hasn’t collected the data. To answer this question, classmate and… Keep reading…

Breakfast Links: Narrowing, tunnelling, and bulldozing streets
Suburbs going multi-modal: Fresh off the heels of Virginia’s cul-de-sac ban, VDOT plans to convert two lanes of Reston’s Lawyers Road into two bike lanes, plus a center turn lane. The Reston Association has also recommended reducing the speed limit from 45 to 35 miles per hour. For context, as recently as 1967, Lawyers Road was a one-lane dirt path. (Restonian,… Keep reading…

2009 wish list for transit
Since it’s almost time to put on your suit/tuxedo/ballgown and party like it’s 2009, I sat down and thought about the best ways to improve transit in our region in the future. This list breaks down into two categories: near term and long term. Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Thinking about urbanism edition
Conserbanism: A recent panel on transportation and energy featured conservatives and liberals who all agree on transit and compact development. For the conservatives, global warming isn’t the reason; while painting urbanism as an environmental issue is a powerful argument, it shouldn’t be the only one. Via Ryan Avent. Keep reading…

2003 WMATA expansion map
When I went to interview Jack Evans, I discovered this map which hangs in his office. It’s a 2003 map, apparently produced by WMATA, showing the Silver Line and a potential separated Blue Line alignment. Blue Line maps, such as this one in the Post, never showed a lot of detail about station locations; this one does. Keep reading…

2030 track map
John Cambron has an excellent track map showing the layout of all switches, yards and platforms in the Metrorail system. Now, he’s expanded that map based on the Metro 2030 vision to create a potential 2030 track layout. Keep reading…
