For fun: design the ultimate SmartBike system
Yesterday, I suggested creating a comprehensive regional or national bike sharing program using a stimulus grant. Between DC and Arlington, the ideal system would have 5,400 bikes. If we included the rest of the walkable and bikeable communities inside the Beltway, let’s say 7,500. DC averages 12 bikes per station, which would mean about 625 stations. (Vélib has… Keep reading…

Let’s stimulate with a major bike sharing program
Arlington hopes to launch a bike sharing pilot this year. DC plans to expand its 120-bike, 10-station SmartBike program by another ten stations as well. That would be great. But at the recent DDOT oversight hearing, Mount Pleasant ANC Commissioner and bike and pedestrian advocate Phil Lepanto asked, why not 50 new DC stations this year, and another 50 every year? Or more? Keep reading…

DDOT releases TDM recommendations for new development
When any new building appears in the city, its residents, office workers and/or shoppers have to travel to and from the building. How can we make bike sharing programs compatible?
In the comments thread for this morning’s breakfast links, Ben relayed some news (or maybe not so new news) that Arlington is planning a bike sharing program. According to various commenters, the program won’t be compatible with DC’s SmartBike, since SmartBike works with Clear Channel, Arlington doesn’t have bus shelter advertising, Clear Channel… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Stretch your mind
Do cities hurt your brain? The Boston Globe writes that “Just being in an urban environment, [reserachers] have found, impairs our basic mental processes. … While it’s long been recognized that city life is exhausting — that’s why Picasso left Paris — this new research suggests that cities actually dull our thinking, sometimes dramatically… Keep reading…

Morning links: watch out for the future
Danger: falling budgets: Metro is just the latest transit agency nationwide to warn of a looming budget crisis. Metro staff proposed $176 million in cuts, of which $103 million would come from staff and expenses and $73 million in service cuts. The board promised not to raise fares until 2010, though they could change their minds. No word yet on which cuts will happen. Keep reading…
