Cutting transit: a 1958 solution to a 2008 problem
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has proposed budget cuts to RideOn that would reduce service. Meanwhile, Leggett doesn’t plan to cut any road projects. Every little road “upgrade” (and by “upgrade” I mean widening, making cars go faster, and causing more pedestrian injuries) in the county is still going forward as planned. Keep reading…

Breakfast links: The more things change…
What does Obama’s win mean for the District? That’s what a lot of local blogs are asking. Politico and Eleanor Holmes Norton suggest not to get expectations too high, at least at first. If he follows Newark mayor Cory Booker’s advice, Obama’s policies will likely help all metropolitan areas, including DC. But whereas JFK (who started the Metro system) had… Keep reading…

White Flint at forefront of urbanism on Rockville Pike
Rockville Pike between the NIH and downtown Rockville is an ugly mess of an edge city. Like Tysons, it has too much density to be truly car friendly, but all the ugliness of suburbia: strip malls set back behind acres of surface parking. This is all connected by a six lane road with speed limits that are too high to be safe for pedestrians. The irony is that unlike Tysons, Rockville Pike already… Keep reading…

The Montgomery County Council thinks the Planning Board—and the GGW community—are right about the flaws in the Road Code. Six of them sent a letter to the MoCo DOT concurring with the Planning Board’s objections. From the letter: Keep reading…

MoCo road code, AAA oppose tree-lined medians
Montgomery County is finalizing a new “road code” to define basic standards for roads of different types across the county. It’s a good idea to update the standards, but in the hands of MoCo’s traffic engineers and some county leaders, it’s become a blindly pro-traffic sledgehammer that will force pedestrian-unfriendly design throughout the… Keep reading…
