More map contest results, part 2: Helpful inclusions
The rules for our map contest said that beyond the Silver Line, Franconia-Greenbelt service, and Farragut “virtual tunnel,” maps could use their judgment about what to include and what to leave off. We’ve already talked about commuter rail lines, bus lines, and parking icons as elements to add or omit, and the comments on several maps discussed the wisdom… Keep reading…

As urban center, New Carrollton faces uphill battle
Since 1978, the rail station at New Carrollton has been a transportation hub of increasing importance. For Prince George’s County, it’s the transit hub, hosting some 25 local bus routes, inter-city buses, Amtrak and MARC trains, and the Orange Line. Sometime early in the next decade, it will also be home to the Purple Line. But despite these advantages, the area… Keep reading…

Often, they know where they want to go, but Metro’s complicated format gives them three different choices on how they should pay. They have to refer to another table to figure out which one is correct. It’s akin to… Keep reading…

Map contest winners, part 5: Commuter rail and short turns
While the jurors in our map contest tended to lean toward maps with the familiarity of Wyman’s design, the voters in the peoples’ choice element sided with maps that took a fresh look at the system. The third place finisher in the people’s choice voting was Map B, by Andrew Duggan. Keep reading…

Map contest winners, part 4: Bus lines on the rail map
The entries in our map contest were all great and unique. But one map stood out for a particular feature: showing bus lines. That map, Map N, by David Alpert, attempted to include major bus lines on the rail map, in the spirit of maps like Boston’s MBTA. David’s map took 2nd place in the people’s choice part of the contest, with 208 first-place votes, and received… Keep reading…
