Streetcars now on the front burner
Over 100 people packed a theater at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street, NE last night to hear DDOT Director Gabe Klein and Chief of Staff Scott Kubly talk about DC’s streetcar project. DC has had plans to build streetcars for many years, but recently progress seems to have stalled. Keep reading…

Poplar Point planners present possibilities
Should Poplar Point become two separate districts, one extending the Anacostia neighborhood and one connecting across the river? Or should it be one neighborhood, centered around the Metro station leaving parkland along the waterfront, or activating the waterfront with a large park to one side? Should DC redevelop the Anacostia Metro garage, or leave it? These are some of… Keep reading…

Railbanking could fix the Anacostia streetcar dilemma
DC has gone back and forth on the planned Anacostia streetcar, first planning to run it in an unused CSX right-of-way, then switching to a street alignment, then moving the alignment. If DC instead took advantage of “railbanking,” they could still run the streetcar on the CSX line, build a streetcar more cheaply than the current street alignment, and give Anacostia a… Keep reading…

As we discussed last week, this will impose a 5-cent fee on all free carryout bags, paper or plastic, from food and liquor stores. Stores keep 1 cent, or 2 if they offer (as Giant does) a 5-cent rebate to customers who bring… Keep reading…

Get plastic bags out of the Anacostia
Many of the plastic bags from supermarkets and other stores end up in the Anacostia River, clogging up small tributaries, killing fish and birds, and eventually ending up in tiny pieces in our food supply. Next week, Councilmember Tommy Wells will introduce a bill to push shoppers and stores to use reusable bags instead of the disposable plastic bags. Delegate Al Carr of Montgomery… Keep reading…

11th Street bridges, part 1: The plan
DDOT plans to rebuild the 11th Street bridges, which cross the Anacostia River from the Southeast Freeway to the Anacostia Freeway (295). DC will spend $500 million on the project, with the vast majority coming from local rather than federal coffers. The aging bridges need replacing, but the project does much more than repair the bridges. Keep reading…
