15th Street bike lane almost done, but won’t go north of U
The protected, contraflow bike lane on 15th Street will be completed this week, DDOT officials say. After notifying residents from Massachusetts Avenue to U Street, DDOT has been hard at work painting the lane, installing pylons, and putting up signs: DDOT’s contractor also started to install the lane between U and V Streets, which makes a lot of sense to connect… Keep reading…

DDOT to start 15th Street contraflow bike lane next week
DC will soon have its first protected bicycle lane. DDOT is ready to begin construction on a protected, contraflow lane for bicyclists to ride south on 15th Street NW between U Street and Massachusetts Avenue. By placing the lane adjacent to the sidewalk, buffered from high-speed traffic by parked cars, this will create a more comfortable environment for cyclists. According… Keep reading…

The waiting game: Two intersections now safer for pedestrians
Delayed implementation of curb extensions at the deadly intersection of 15th and W, NW didn’t stop DDOT from finishing strong. The intersection did not receive the quick-curb called for in the draft plan and hastily installed in July to slow drivers like the one that killed a pedestrian in May while turning from 15th onto W. Instead, DDOT has installed more permanent curb, and… Keep reading…

Where’s the 15th Street contraflow lane?
In February, DDOT decided to experimentally modify 15th Street, NW between Massachusetts Avenue and Florida Avenue to include the city’s first protected bicycle lane. That lane would let cyclists ride south along 15th, opposite the flow of traffic. Cyclists could also ride northbound in a regular bicycle lane. This is a cheap, quick change that DDOT could make with some paint,… Keep reading…

DDOT completes temporary bulb-outs at 15th and W
DDOT installed “quick curbs” at one corner of the “death star” intersection of 15th and W Streets, NW yesterday. This is one of the most important elements of their interim plan to make this intersection safer for pedestrians, which they put into action after a driver killed a pedestrian there in May. DDOT’s pedestrian safety improvements forget the part that protects pedestrians
After an SUV driver struck and killed a pedestrian at the “Death Star” intersection of 15th, W, Florida and New Hampshire at 10:30 am on May 30, DDOT Director Gabe Klein released a draft plan of safety improvements for this dangerous crossroads. By not closing the dangerous “slip lane” from 15th Street to W Street and Florida Avenue, the draft proposal did… Keep reading…

Before DDOT got to improve safety, a pedestrian was killed at 15th & W
Like the Starburst Interection on H Street NE, many roads come together in a similar shape where New Hampshire Ave, Florida Ave, and W Street meet 15th Street, NW. Saturday’s fatality may earn it the nickname Death Star. The MPD news release explains the basics of what happened during broad daylight on Saturday morning:… Keep reading…
